We moved into our first house on Churchfield Circle in Oct. of 1976 and shortly after we moved in, our neighbor Bill Carney, his two sons and his caregiver moved in next door. Bill was a Vietnam veteran who became a quadriplegic while serving our country. He was amazing. The garage of his house was turned into his special room and next to his hospital bed, there was a big window that looked out onto the front yard and our house. From the time Amber could barely walk, she would want to walk over to that window and wave to Bill. Amber and Jennie would blow kisses and show him their pictures through that window. As the girls grew up and even after we moved away, we always went to see Bill. He loved seeing the girls in their Halloween costumes and always had loads of candy for them. When Jennie was older, I remember her taking a whole group of her friends over to see Bill. Every year Bill always had bunnies ordered and bought for each of the girls for Easter. He loved giving them Christmas gifts and having us sing Christmas carols to him. He kept every home made card the girls ever made for him and their pictures lined his walls. Bill died many years ago, but the memories we have of him will always hold a special place in our hearts. He taught us all so much about courage, love of country, giving, kindness, and being grateful.
Bill was a good man, a real hero, and a true blessing in our lives.
